This study seeks to investigate and determine a typology of the structures of online education units within higher education institutions in the United States to better identify and describe the landscape of online education. Moreover, the study intends to make sense of the potential trend identified in the CHLOE 3 Report (2019) that indicates more institutions are now identifying with a more centralized online operation; as well as address the gaps in the literature around online organizational structure. With the understanding that higher education institutions are complex organizations and centralization can take many forms across functional areas, this study seeks to create a typology that institutions can identify with, and then use to better understand strengths and challenges of the [their] current organizational structure through the findings of the study.
The study consists of a series of semi-structured qualitative inquiry interviews that will be conducted to make sense of the answers provided in the CHLOE 3 survey. Each interview will cover one of the four dimensions designed by the CORAL team as important student lifecycle functional areas within an institution. In total, four interviews lasting approximately one hour each via a recorded and transcribed webconference session will be conducted. Each participant will be compensated at the end of the interview cycle a total of $100 (once the fourth interview is complete). Please contact either PI if you are interested in participating at bbouchey[at]nl[dot]edu or drefgratz[at]gmail[dot]com.
This study has Institutional Review Board approval from National Louis University.
